Funding options for postgraduate international students

Oxford Brookes offers a range of scholarships to international postgraduate students who pay international fees.

Alumnus Discount Scheme

Discounts are available to graduates/alumni from overseas who register for additional postgraduate degrees.

Oxford Brookes is pleased to recognise the personal loyalty shown by graduates/alumni registering for additional postgraduate degree/s, where they are categorised as 'overseas' students for fee purposes. A discount of 10% of the student's yearly tuition fee will be allowed on registration.

Eligible students include any international student who has graduated from Oxford Brookes University and wishes to stay on or return for an additional degree (e.g. an undergraduate student who then studies for a taught master's programme, or a taught master's graduate who enrols on another taught master's or an MPhil/PhD programme).

John Henry Brookes Scholarships 2012-13

Through the Graduate School, we are offering a number of scholarships across a range of subject areas for UK, EU and international students wishing to undertake full-time taught master's degrees in September 2012.

Applications will only be accepted from students who have already been made conditional or unconditional offers by Oxford Brookes University.

You should apply for your place on the relevant courses below, and then submit your scholarship application.

IF YOU APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP WITHOUT THE OFFER OF A PLACE, YOUR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

The deadline for receipt of applications is midnight on Friday 29 June 2012. They should be emailed or posted to the address stated on the forms below.

Scholarships will be awarded for academic excellence and each award will be paid towards the tuition fee for a taught master's degree. These scholarships do not include a maintenance grant. Please see ‘Notes for Guidance’ for further details.

A number of £1,000 to £3,000 awards are open to UK, EU and International students studying a full-time Masters in any of the following Departments:

A number of £1,000 to £3,000 awards are open to UK, EU and International students studying a  full-time Masters in any of the following Departments:
Department of Biological and Medical Sciences
Department of Clinical Health Care

Department of Sport and Health Sciences

There is a total of £8,000 to award across these programmes.

NB: Please note applicants for the MSc Adult/Children’s/Mental Health Nursing (Pre-Registration) and MSc Midwifery (Pre-Registration) are not eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Santander Scholarships 2012-13

The International bank Santander is awarding postgraduate scholarships to new Master's students at Oxford Brookes on an annual basis.

This year six awards of £5,000 will be made to UK, EU or International full-time students starting their programmes in September 2012. A total of £30,000 is being awarded in scholarships. Successful applicants will also receive a further 10% discount on their tuition fees from Oxford Brookes.

Funding is offered to students who are graduating from or who have graduated from named universities in the UK, Argentina, Brazil. Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, Russia, the United States, China, Germany, Singapore, Poland and Belgium. The scholarship fund aims to reward the most academically gifted students from these institutions.

To apply you must be:

    * studying at, or a graduate from, a university in the Santander Universidades Scheme

    * expecting to have, or already have, a good UK bachelor honours degree or equivalent degree from your home country

    * in possession of a formal offer for a full-time master’s degree at Oxford Brookes University for the following year.

The De Rohan Scholarship 2012-13

Applications are invited from students registering in the academic year 2012/13 for an MA in Creative Writing, English or History for this scholarship of £5,000. The Scholarship is open to full-time Home, EU and International students

Applicants are invited to fill in and submit the application form, together with a CV, to Charmian Hearne, Research Administrator, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.  The Scholarship will be awarded to the candidate judged to have the greatest potential to make a difference to their subject, and for whom achieving an MA is likely to contribute significantly to their career and/or personal development.  Academic achievement to date will also be taken into account.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of the statements make in the application and on previous academic achievement and performance.

Family Discount

If two or more members of your immediate family are studying and paying tuition fees at Oxford Brookes at the same time as you, we will deduct 10% from your tuition fees for each family member.

This discount is open to all family members (siblings and spouses) who are categorised as 'overseas' for fees purposes. For more information please contact the Student Finance team.


Pre-Masters Scholarships

Available to students with unconditional offers for the Pre-Master’s Diploma. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a competitive essay. For more information, please visit the Pre-Master's course pages.


Visa Discount

The University will pay up to £386 towards the cost of visa renewal for international students who wish to progress to an Oxford Brookes postgraduate course starting in September 2011 after completing any of the following courses:

To claim this discount, students should apply to the Student Finance Office, either in person at the counter or in writing, after having renewed and paid for their visa. They must provide a copy of their passport, showing the visa renewal sticker or stamp, which must be dated after they have finished their course. Unless a request is made to the Student Finance Office no discount will be awarded. The discount will be debited against the tuition fees for their first semester.

Funded by the British Council

Awarded for postgraduate study or research.

Range from short attachments to research leading to a PhD.

Awarded by the local British Council Director; he or she decides the subject areas that will be eligible for a grant and selects the candidates.

You must apply to the British Council Office in your own country for a fellowship, and you are usually required to be a national and a resident of the country in which you apply.

If you are considered for a grant, you will be interviewed in your own country.

UK scholarship schemes

Many British Council offices administer scholarship schemes that are only open to nationals from a particular country. Your local British Council office should be able to give you information about these schemes.

You may also be eligible to apply for one of our partial scholarships available for international students who pay international fees.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)

Funded by the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Assists Commonwealth students and academics of high intellectual calibre to study in other Commonwealth countries.

Around 400 students come to the UK each year under the scheme.

You may be eligible for a Commonwealth Scholarship if you are a citizen of either a Commonwealth country (but not the Commonwealth of Independent States), or a British dependent territory.

Scholarships are primarily intended for postgraduate study or research. Candidates should hold a good honours degree or equivalent qualification appropriate for admission to their proposed course of study.

If there are no undergraduate courses in a particular subject in your own country or regional university, it may sometimes be possible for you to apply to do a first degree course under this scheme.

Fellowships are usually for established teachers in universities or medical schools for study at post-doctoral level. They are not awarded for degree or diploma courses.

British Chevening Scholarships

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Provides awards for present and future leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers, in particular from countries with whom the UK's economic relations are expected to develop.

Awards are for one-year diploma and master's courses in various fields.

Selection of candidates is carried out by British Embassies and High Commissions in consultation with the local British Council Director.

You should therefore be in residence in your home country when you apply.

Marshall Scholarships

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Available to United States citizens, who have obtained first degrees from an accredited university or college in the US within the last 3 years, to undertake study in any subject leading to a degree at a UK university.

Selection is by regional committee in the USA.

Fulbright Graduate Student Awards

Funded by the Department for Education and Employment and the US government

Available to US-based graduate students for study in the UK.

Preference is given to outstanding graduate students of academic or artistic excellence who are potential leaders in their field and have good reasons for coming to the UK.

Applicants are advised to apply to more than one university and to check and adhere to university deadlines which differ from institution to institution.

Fulbright awards can also be combined with other awards (e.g. ORS) to cover more than one year of study.

Said Foundation Scholarships

Funded through a partnership between the Said Foundation and Oxford Brookes University

These are available to Jordanian, Lebanese, Syrian or Palestinian students.

Up to three scholarships can be awarded to Oxford Brookes students in each year for taught master’s or master’s by research courses in any field. The scholarships will cover tuition fees and a maintenance allowance.

Candidates must agree to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained in one of the Said Foundation's target countries. The decision on who should receive the scholarships is made by the Said Foundation, who will take into account the usefulness of their subjects to the Middle East, the excellence and future potential of the candidates and their financial need.

UKEAS Scholarship

The scholarship of £1,000 is available to a student applying from China to study the full time MSc eBusiness course starting September 2012

Gaza Oxford Brookes University Scholarship 2012-2013

Applications are invited for the Gaza Oxford Brookes University Scholarship for entry in September 2012.

The scholarship covers travel expenses, full fees and living expenses for the Academic Year 2012/2013 only.

Applicants should fulfil the following criteria :
•    Wish to study for a one year full-time taught masters at Oxford Brookes University
•    Have a good undergraduate degree ( equivalent to a 1st/2:1)
•    Be under 35 years of age
•    Have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above
•    Have relevant work experience
•    Undertake to return to Gaza after completing their studies
•    Be in financial need

The following fields of study are considered priority areas but other areas may be considered:
•    Built environment, regeneration , development , environmental management
•    Development and emergency practice
•    Public Health, disease prevention and control, rehabilitation, social care
•    Law, human rights
•    Computer Sciences (IT)

Applicants should apply using the Oxford Brookes post-graduate application form and should also write a covering letter of no more than 500 words explaining how they meet the criteria and why they should be considered for the scholarship.  Application forms must be sent directly to the British Council in Gaza.

Doctoral Training Programmes and other funding for Research

Research studentships within the University are offered from time to time.
