Financial support for undergraduate UK/EU students 2012-13

You may be worried about the cost of coming to university but there is financial support available. A government loan to cover your tuition fees is available to all UK students, and you may also be eligible for a scholarship, fee waiver or bursary.

Please note some financial support is available for UK students only and not available for EU students.

Details of financial support for 2013-14 are likely to be similar to those listed below - and should be confirmed in July 2012.

Tuition Fee Loan

(UK and EU Students)

You don't pay for tuition up front.

The government will provide a loan to cover your full tuition charges. You or your parents don't have to contribute anything now – you start to pay them back yourself once you graduate and are earning at least £21,000 a year.

Eligible part-time students who start their degree in September 2012 will, for the first time, have access to loans for tuition fees. They won't have to pay upfront as long as it's their first degree.

To apply for a tuition fee loan please contact Student Finance England.  The application service for 2012-13 is now open. The deadline for applications,  in order to receive your maintenance payments at the start of the academic year, is 31st May 2012. You can continue to apply after this date but there may be a delay in receiving your first maintenance payment.

Repaying your loan

Repayments will be 9% of any income above £21,000, so the amount you repay each month will depend on your earnings. Examples of monthly repayments for loans covering tuition and living costs:

Fee waivers

(UK and EU Students)

The Brookes Fee Waiver Scheme is available to full time students who are on degree courses of £9,000.

If your houshold income is below £40,000, you should be eligible for a fee waiver (a reduction in your tuition fees). Our fee waiver scheme is available to qualifying students for each year of their studies, and does not need to be paid back. It is available to all eligible UK and EU students. The scheme will be partly funded by the government's National Scholarship Programme.

Household Income Fee waiver
£0 - £4,999 £2,500
£5,000 - £14,999 £2,000
£15,000 - £39,999 £1,000

Your eligibility for a fee waiver will be determined by the household income details you provide to Student Finance England (SFE) as part of your application for student support. These income details will be shared with Oxford Brookes for the purpose of awarding fee waivers.

You should apply for a fee loan for the full amount of your course fee and Oxford Brookes will reduce your loan once your household income has been fully assessed and verified by SFE.  This will be undertaken in Semester 1 2012-13. You do not need to apply to Oxford Brookes for a fee waiver. We will send you confirmation of your entitlement in December 2012 once we have processed your details from SFE.

The Oxford Brookes Bursary Scheme

(UK students)

This scheme is open to full time degree students on £9,000 courses.

If your household income is below £30,000 then a bursary can help towards your living costs. Our bursaries scheme is available to qualifying students for each year of their studies and does not need to be paid back. It is available to all eligible UK students who are in receipt of an HE maintenance grant.

The scheme will be partly funded by the government's National Scholarship Programme.

How much will the bursary be?

The Brookes bursary is determined using the same residual family income calculation that is used by the Student Loans Company to work out the amount of HE maintenance grant you receive.  The Brookes Bursary is different depending on which year you join your course at the university.

Household income Bursary
£0 - £4,999 £2,000
£5,000 - £9,999 £1,500
£10,000 - £14,999 £1,200
£15,000 - £19,999 £1,050
£20,000 - £24,999 £900
£25,000 - £29,999 £300

The bursary will be paid in three instalments in 2012-13

  • 5th November 2012 (25%)
  • 8th February 2013 (25%)
  • 15th April 2013 (50%)

You must be in full time attendance at the University on 24 September 2012, 24 January 2013 and 1 April 2013 to be entitled to each instalment of the bursary.

Applying

You don't need to apply - we will know if you are eligible from your means test for the HE maintenance grant. All eligible students who have not opted out of the "consent to share" part of their SLC sudent support application will automatically be assessed for a bursary.

Please note you must be means tested by the end of the academic year (31 August) to be entitled to claim your bursary for the current academic year.  Students who consent to share their information, or who are means tested after the end of an academic year are no longer eligible to receive the previous year's bursary.
