Computing
We make good use of technology to assist teaching and learning.
Our computing facilities include:
- over 750 networked PCs in 37 open-access rooms, a number of which are open 24 hours so you can work when you want to
- colour printing from A4 up to A1 format is available from all the open-access rooms
- a Help Desk and Computer Services Centre Shop open during the day and evenings during semesters for technical enquiries, colour print-out distribution, fax service, hire of laptop computers and the sale of computer consumables
- an online learning environment that supports diverse disciplines
- a wide range of software, covering word-processing, spreadsheets, statistics, CAD, graphing, drawing, presentations, project management, desktop publishing, and programming. There are dozens of programmes that relate to the teaching and learning of specific subjects.
Pooled computer rooms
Our pooled computer room network aims to meet the needs of all users. We offer a range of software designed to support individual learning preferences and requirements. University users can:
- listen to text rather than reading it (which may be particularly useful for dyslexics and speakers of English as a second language)
- create a visual mindmap outline when planning presentations, essays and reports
- proofread their work for grammatical and homophone errors
- convert printed text to a saved audio file that they can listen to on any computer or portable music player
- adjust screen magnification to suit their own needs
- learn how to touch type
HallNet
Most study bedrooms are fitted with a connection to the University's data network, providing access to email and internet services as well as to central file storage areas used for students' files and course materials. Laptop users can also access these services from network points located in designated areas across the University. A charge is made for these services.
Computing facilities for students with disabilities
The new Assistive Technology Suite at Headington Library provides a welcoming study environment for students with disabilities. The Assistive Technology Suite includes three PCs with large monitors, adjustable desks, external speakers, printing facilities and a scanner. Students have access to Supernova and Zoom text software for text magnification and screen reading, in addition to the full spooled PC menu.
