Teaching interests

Unit E explores the pleasures of public architecture, counter programmes and the rigorous but playful nature of the design process. The Unit develops the idea of experimental architectural representation, describing moments of spatial experience.

Research interests

The practice values research alongside commissioned design work. The research focuses on everyday modes of living, experimental architectural representation and the idea of portraying experience rather than reality.

Johan is a qualified architect, chartered of the Danish Architects Association. He was awarded MArch in Architecture with Distinction from The Bartlett School of Architecture and was nominated for the 3d Reid prize. Johan’s work was exhibited in the London 8 exhibition at Sci-Arc in Los Angeles, curated by Sir Peter Cook. Johan studied undergraduate Architecture at The Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen, before moving to London.

Johan established Archmongers with her colleague Margaret Bursa in 2010. The practice is a cross-disciplinary architecture and design studio working with residential, community and cultural projects as well as design research. The studio works with design through making, and development through collaboration and conversation. The design work strives to harvest the extraordinary in any given spatial environment, by using architectural interventions to discover, articulate and mediate to create visual and spatial delight.

Johan has taught first year Bsc Architecture as a design tutor at the Bartlett School of Architecture in 2009-2013 and has been visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy of Arts, Copenhagen.
