Leading the PG MSc Spatial Planning course, together with PG and UG teaching.

Prior to coming to Oxford, I was a Lecturer in the University of Aberdeen’s Geography Department and teaching Spatial Planning, Land Economy and Human Geography. Programme Director for the Master of Land Economy/ Rural Surveying Programme. 

Extensive industry experience in: 

  • Tourism development management and destination marketing with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms DMO
  • Private sector planning consultancy – leading planning projects for Bidwells
  • City centre regeneration, urban realm strategy and place marketing coordination with Aberdeen City Centre Partnership
  • Leading region wide environmental projects with Scottish Enterprise   
  • Local authority planning and economic development departments 

Research Interests

  • Strategic place marketing - linkages between urban design, urban realm and strategic marketing theory in driving urban city growth, competitiveness and economic regeneration
  • Urban regeneration and economic development - links to planning in practice
  • Tourism and culture as a catalyst for economic regeneration
  • Rural economic development - interactions with land, people, communities and the environment
  • Mountain areas - conservation, wild land policies and strategies in practice
  • National parks, landscape and nature conservation and the convergence of planning policy in practice
  • Tourism planning linked to rural diversification and cultural development in rural locations
  • Leadership in planning
