Art Rocker described them as ‘alt country flavoured power-pop joy in the vein of Wilco and Son Volt,’ and Toliesel, whose members include four Brookes alumni, are getting ready to fill the Ashmolean with their shimmering, shoegaze sounds. What a treat.
Tell us who you are
Tom Jowett, Nick Seagrave, Gabs Catalano, Adam James and Jack Olchawski. Four of us are previous Brookes students, it's where Toliesel was formed.
Tell us a bit about your style/musical influences
Toliesel play Americana infused indie-pop. Some of it is loud and expansive, some of it is reflective and personal, but it's always beautiful. Our influences range from the likes of Neil Young, Deerhunter and Death Cab For Cutie.
Who are some of your musical heroes?
Wilco, Neil Young, Lockett Pundt
What’s the best gig you’ve ever played?
Either supporting Dawes during their tour with Mumford and Sons, or our headline show at the Jericho tavern last year.
…and the worst?
Birmingham University SU in the early days... we were quietened so the lads playing pool could better concentrate.
Oh dear. What’s your musical ambition?
To make beautiful, adventurous music and to have a good time doing it.
