As a member of professional services staff, you play a valuable role in the success of Brookes by offering excellent services directly to students and other stakeholders and/or by supporting those staff who do.
There are many different roles which can be categorised under the umbrella term, ‘professional services’ and because of this, it is impossible to provide a single set of learning and development options which will meet everyone’s needs. However, the following information and options may be helpful to you:
The starting point for your development is your current role. Your job description contains details of your main responsibilities and tasks. For some jobs, there are generic job descriptions available. It can be useful to revisit your job description regularly and review how well you match up to the requirements of your job. This can help you to determine your strengths and development areas – which you can then discuss with your manager as part of your PDR (Performance and Development Review).
Your most accessible development options are those that can be arranged as part of your job. These include taking on additional responsibilities, getting involved in or leading projects, acting as a buddy for new recruits, training as a trainer and deputising for your manager.
In addition, other useful development options include internal courses, external courses, work-based qualifications, membership of professional bodies, job-shadowing, mentoring, internal coaching, external coaching, secondments, job moves and promotions.
OCSLD has created a Career and Personal Development website which provides useful resources to help you. These include i-GROW, the AUA (Association of University Administrators) Professional Behaviours model and Role-related Skills pages.
