Pay and pensions

Pay and grading structure

Oxford Brookes University employs its academic, research and support staff on a 12-grade structure linked to the national Higher Education (HE) pay spine. There are a further four grades for senior staff. Our grading structure is underpinned by the HERA job evaluation scheme.

The salary spine is reviewed annually in the light of the national pay award for HE. Staff progress through the normal pay range for their grade by annual increments. Staff who demonstrate a sustained and exceptional contribution may access the contribution salary points above the normal range.

Promotion

There are established career progression routes for academic staff. The titles of reader and professor may be achieved through our regular promotions exercises. There are five pathways for promotion: research; teaching, learning and assessment; enterprise and knowledge exchange; professional achievement; and academic leadership.

To support our outstanding student experience we have a promotion grade of Principal Lecturer (Student Experience).

Support staff may gain promotion through internal recruitment or through regrading, where their role and responsibilities have developed over time. We actively encourage staff development and support opportunities for development through internal secondments.

Pensions

The University operates two main pension schemes: Teachers Pension Scheme (TPS) which is primarily for academic and research staff, and the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) which is for all other staff.

Staff who join Brookes and are in active membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) may continue to be members of this scheme.

All staff are automatically enrolled into the relevant pension scheme at the beginning of their employment. The employee and employer both pay contributions, with employee contributions automatically deducted from pay.
