Athlete Z: Where will we draw the line on athlete welfare in sport?
This event has now finished. Please see our events website for details of upcoming events at Brookes.
Who this event is for
Over recent years there has been an increasing public concern with the ethical practices of professional sport, the way athletes are treated and to what extent sporting organisations will go to in the pursuit of success. In 2017, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson led a review into sports duty of care, highlighting an array of ways sport should prioritise athlete’s welfare. That said, issues still remain and ethical concerns across performance sport are still at the forefront of media and public attention. Netflix Original, Athlete A has raised the curtain again on abuses in sport and this has been followed by a wave of ex-athletes who have bravely told their own experience of bullying, fear, abuse and maltreatment. This symposium looks to bring together leading academics to freely and assertively address some of the greatest concerns facing (professional) sport today, with the intention of developing achievable solutions.
