Nelson Mandela Day, also known globally as Nelson Mandela International Day, is celebrated each year on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, 18 July. The day is a commemoration of Mandela’s 67 years of service to humanity, encouraging action and inspiring change through volunteer work, awareness and community service.

The global theme for 2022 is “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.” It’s about identifying those in need around you and doing what you can to make a difference.

To commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day, Oxford Brookes’ BAME Staff Network, in collaboration with Smart Works, is running a Donations Drive from 20 June - 18 July. Smart Works is a nationwide UK charity who specialise in helping unemployed women, including those from BAME backgrounds, find work by providing interview-ready workwear and one-to-one CV & interview coaching.

In addition to the above Donations Drive, and in keeping with the theme of empowering women through the process of job applications and interview preparation, the BAME Staff Network are also running 1) free Student CV Workshops, and 2) a free, in person and online, LUNCH + LEARN session with LinkedIn expert, Juliana Camargo on the theme of Personal Marketing for LinkedIn Success. Students are encouraged to join the Careers team at 10am for a CV workshop.

How to get involved
If you’d like to get involved or would like to join us in celebrating Nelson Mandela Day, there are two ways you can do so.

1) Donate Your Clothing
To support unemployed women preparing for that all-important interview, we’re asking Brookes staff to raid their current wardrobes and select an interview-appropriate article of clothing to ‘gift’ to someone more in need.

Drop off Zone 1: 20 June - 17 July, 2nd Floor in Buckley Building, Headington Campus
Drop off Zone 2: 18 July, 10am - 2pm, JHBB Enquiry Centre (EC).
