Student Engagement: what does it mean? what does it look like?
Call for contributions - now open
This year's theme is student engagement. This is a term widely used these days for a range of purposes (see Trowler & Trowler 2010) and we are embracing it full on this year. Accordingly, we invite colleagues to submit proposals for sessions that not only address or critique the notion, but also exemplify student engagement by involving students in the actual session itself. Students may be involved as presenters, researchers, in role plays, in reflecting on their experience of initiatives, chairing discussions etc. The more creative the better. Students from Exeter were our keynote speakers last year, and were hugely impressive. Now we want to hear from our own students together with our colleagues who are finding innovative ways to include students in aspects of University life and learning.
The date for the Conference has been brought forward into semester time to encourage student participation, both as attendees and in the design and delivery of the workshop/presentation sessions. What we are asking of you is your initial commitment to be involved in a presentation on the day of the conference, and some ideas of the shape that this may take. Because this is in some ways a new venture for all of us, we are putting on some preparatory workshops in the New Year to help contributors to explore and rehearse the feasibility of their ideas for a conference audience.
Your proposals are invited by online submission and will be reviewed before Christmas by the conference organising committee.
Authors of accepted proposals will be invited to attend one or other of the preparatory workshops, and encouraged to submit an article for Brookes eJournal of Learning and Teaching, BeJLT.
Whether you will be a contributor or a delegate, don't forget to mark Wednesday 27 March in your diaries for the conference.
If you would like to talk to someone about your ideas, please contact the Co-Chairs Frances Deepwell or Berry O'Donovan. For all other queries, please contact Roy Grant in OCSLD.
