Jane Ashley Lecture Theatre, Jack Straws Lane, Headington Campus, Marston Road site

Philip Wilkinson is a consultant old age psychiatrist with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer with the University of Oxford. He is also a trained cognitive therapist with an interest in psychological interventions with older people. He undertakes research and development in the use of mindfulness based cognitive therapy in dementia care and in the management of late life depression.

In this lecture, Dr Wilkinson will address the psychological impact on caregivers of providing care to a relative with dementia. He will review the research on stress, burden and depression in caregivers and how this helps to identify those who are most vulnerable. Current psychological treatment approaches will be reviewed. Dr Wilkinson will argue that current memory clinical services place too great an emphasis on assessing cognitive function and too little on assessing caregivers and identifying those who might benefit from focused interventions.
