Details

Dr Michael Hopkins will be visiting Oxford Brookes to give a paper titled “Dean Acheson and the Obligations of Power”.

Dr Hopkins is currently a Senior Lecturer in American History at the University of Liverpool and has written extensively on the early years of the Cold War. His talk coincides with his latest research into the U.S. Secretary of State, Dean Acheson. Widely seen as the “architect” of America’s grand strategy during the pivotal years of 1949-53, Acheson oversaw the creation of a wide array of multinational alliances including the likes of NATO and crafted the American response to the successful Communist revolution in China and the Korean War of June 1950.

Dr Hopkins' talk is set to be an illuminating study of Acheson’s role and actions in devising and executing American policy in this period.
