Dame Katherine Grainger will deliver her 2018 Chancellor’s
lecture on ‘generosity of spirit’ – one of Oxford Brookes’
guiding principles.
In a fast changing world that seems to operate at lightning
quick speeds, how much time is left for moments of
generosity, compassion or thoughtfulness? It is arguable
that we have never been as connected as we are now.
Through incredible technological advances it is simple and
cheap to be in direct visual contact with people on the other
side of the world, to speak to numerous people at once,
to have instant translation capabilities. Yet, ironically, there
is a sense that we are living in a time of real disconnect.
Headlines proclaim that nations are divided, neighbours are
mistrustful, languages cause separation and cultures clash.
Perhaps generosity of spirit has never been more relevant
and more needed and, arguably, examples of selfless
support for others are all the more powerful for that reason.
Join Katherine for a look at the generosity of the human
spirit through examples from history, literature, sport and
other areas.
