This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (“catastrophe”), when the creation of the state of Israel resulted in the forced displacement of some 750,000 Palestinians.
Dr Ghada Karmi witnessed the Nakba as a child growing up in Jerusalem and will speak about the personal and national cost the Nakba had on her family and community. Professor Ilan Pappe will analyse the Nakba from the academic perspective of an Israeli New Historian.
Ilan and Ghada are colleagues at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. Ilan, an Israeli academic, is the Director and Ghada is a Research Fellow specialising in the Palestine/Israel conflict.
This is the 2018 annual Oxford Brookes Gaza lecture. Brookes established a Gaza scholarship in 2010 “as a sign to the people of Gaza that they are not forgotten.”
