Between the 1930s and the 1960s, anthropologists, together with geographers and agronomists, made an important but often misunderstood contribution to the knowledge of Portuguese vernacular architecture. What was that contribution, why is it often misunderstood, and what lessons can we learn from it, regarding issues of contemporary uses of the traditional vernacular?
