The role of nurses in recognising and reducing vulnerability

Jane Ashley Lecture Theatre, Marston Campus, Headington Campus, Marston Road site

Professor Ruth Northway explores the nature of vulnerability and argues that nurses have an important role to play in its reduction.

Is vulnerability inevitable in the context of health care? Some groups of people (such as those with learning disabilities or dementia) are often considered to be particularly vulnerable but this should not be an inevitable consequence of belonging to a specific group. It can be reduced or even eliminated if we understand what it is that people are vulnerable to - and then work to reduce these factors and their impact.

You will learn about recommendations for change, based on the importance of nurses recognising and responding to potential vulnerability in a proactive way, and the challenges of such an approach for nursing practice, education and research.
