Dr Christina Horvath (English and Modern Languages) and Dr Juliet Carpenter (Planning) will run an exploratory workshop on Friday 14 December 2012 at the Institut Français, London. First event of the 24-month project, Banlieue Network” funded by the AHRC Networking Scheme, the workshop will bring together members of the network’s steering committee for a day of debate and discussion. The steering committee is composed by ten leading scholars with specialism in urban segregation in the fields of French Studies, Urban Geography, Urban Governance, Urban Planning, Linguistics, Photography, Politics and Sociology who represent institutions in the UK, France, Belgium and Germany. They will explore the possibilities of interdisciplinary research collaboration in the field of segregated communities, outreach to non-academic audiences and strategies designed to fight negative clichés attached to disadvantaged urban areas. Delegates will also address organisational issues, forthcoming events as well as possible ways of disseminating research outputs, promoting the network’s activities and making the network sustainable. 

The next event organised by the network is scheduled on 4th-5th April 2013. The interdisciplinary conference „Communities at the Periphery: Perceptions and Representations of the French Banlieues” will take place at the at the Institut Français, London. Members of the steering committee will act as the scientific board of the conference.
