Professor Raymond Dwek FRS CBE talks on how Israel's achievements in science and education have contributed to our lives.
development of Israel's Negev desert is both amazing and
transformational. Drylands cover 41% of the earth's land surface. The
technology developed in Israel to protect limited water resources, from
drip irrigation to desalination, offers hope to the 29% of the people in
the world who do not have access to safe drinking water.
technology for the mobile phone, microprocessors that enabled the
development of desktop and laptop computers, the USB memory stick, the
firewall and anti-virus software are just part of Israel's contribution
to our lives.
In medical devices, Israel is a world leader. One example
is the PillCam, which enables the visualization and detection of
disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The Microbiome is another of
Israel's pioneering research projects for human health, agriculture and
animal welfare. And Israel became a natural choice to see how well the
new vaccines for Covid-19 were working in the real world.
