Oxford Brookes University has been listed as a finalist in Oxfordshire Sport and Physical Activity’s Oxfordshire Sports Awards, it has been announced today (30 November).
The University has been shortlisted in the ‘Active Workplace’ category for its work in supporting staff to be active including Brookes Active; a collection of activities, events and campaigns at Oxford Brookes to help staff and students and the local community enjoy active and healthy lifestyles.
Earlier this year, Brookes Active launched the Brookes Active Workplace Challenge which was created to help members of staff monitor activity levels and challenge themselves to maintain an active lifestyle. Staff are invited to take part in individual and team challenges and also have the opportunity to win prizes and access rewards for taking part.

Since it was launched in February, over 400 members of staff have registered on the Challenge and 34 teams have taken part in the Autumn Team Challenge that concludes today. Since the 1 October, Brookes staff taking part in the challenge have logged physical activity equivalent to running for over 4000 hours. In the process, those who have used active travel such as walking or cycling to work rather than driving, have saved over three tonnes of CO2.
Of its success so far, Brookes Active Project Manager Tristan Hale said: “We recognise the importance of our staff having an active lifestyle to their wellbeing and productivity as well as setting an example for students. The Brookes Active Workplace Challenge has been just one of the ways that we’ve tried to engage staff and it has been fantastic to see the way colleagues have encouraged each other to fit activity into their lives."
