Age UK Oxfordshire has opened a charity shop at Oxford Brookes and is now looking for donations of household items, clothes, knick-knacks and books.

The shop is in the Helena Kennedy Student Centre at the University’s Headington Hill site and is open to students, staff and members of the public.

Student volunteers are helping with the day-to-day running of the store. Further volunteering roles will be available in areas such as recycling, designing and creating goods and merchandise for sale. Art students will be making fashion items for the shop.

William Norton, the charity’s chairman of trustees (pictured), said at the opening: “This is a first of its kind. Students will be selling their own artefacts and they are going to be doing the selling and marketing.”

He added: “These shops are great for the environment. One of the greatest recycling facilities in the UK is the charity shops. And, of course, it’s raising desperately needed money. By raising funds in the charity shops we can carry out projects we can’t attract funding for anywhere else.

“I’m so passionate about the work our volunteers do. We have about 120 staff and 500 volunteers. Without them we couldn’t do the work we do.”

Sarah Oloko, a second-year Business and Marketing Management student (also pictured), staffed the shop during the opening.

Lorna Froud, Head of Careers at Oxford Brookes said: “Alongside showing our commitment to the local community, the project provides a great opportunity for skill development for our students.

“We want the shop to be a focal point for a huge range of activities both practical and creative – the possibilities are endless. A further benefit provided by working with Age UK is the link forged between the generations.”

Opening hours of the shop are Monday to Friday 11am – 2pm and 3pm – 5pm.
