Two Oxford Brookes University alumni have received the Best Fiction Short at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

Linda Ludwig and James Curle, who both studied Film at the University, won the accolade for Man of the Hour. The drama premiered at the festival was part of the official selection of the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. It was written by actor, writer and producer Tom Palmer and co-produced and directed by Linda and James.

Linda Ludwig is a director and producer at London and Oxford based production company Inquisitive Pictures. She said: “We were the only UK nominated film and competing with some seriously excellent films so winning Best Short Film is a huge honour and success for us as we plan our debut feature.”

Recent graduates Rachael Burger and Mari Bekkevold and current second year students Sebastian Garcia Murillo and Marco Petulla also contributed to the film.

The largest cohort ever of Oxford Brookes Film students has also attended Cannes this year. This is the fourth year running that Oxford Brookes BA Film students have gained entry to Cannes as badge holders.

The students have attended various screenings including Jean-Luc Godard’s hotly anticipated return to acting in Le Livre d’Image, HBO’s Farenheit 451, sitting just a few seats away from actors Michael B Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Michael Shannon (Shape of Water, Under the Silver Lake), and one of the most talked about films this year The House That Jack Built.

Senior Lecturer in Film at Oxford Brookes Alberto Miro was approached to feature in a documentary by Rao Rampillo. Alberto said: “It's been a great year for Oxford Brookes at Cannes 2018 with an award-winning film, a rich experience for students gaining access to screenings and networking opportunities including yacht parties, and for me a chance to work with the acclaimed actor, producer and writer Rao Rampillo.”
