Four Oxford Brookes students studying on the Art and Design Foundation course are to display their work at a city gallery.

Illustrator Rachel Hardwick, photographer Rishi Mullett-Sadones (whose work is pictured right) and fine artists James Lomax and Henry Franks will show their pieces to the general public at the Boiler Room in the Jam Factory Restaurant, Park End Street.

They will join seven other up-and-coming artists from across Oxfordshire, all aged between 18 and 20, who are studying arts subjects at other institutions. The exhibition is simply titled ‘Eleven’.

On the preview night former Oxford Brookes Fine Art student Lauren O’Day will also be presenting a live performance piece.

Alison Honour, course leader of the Art and Design Foundation and Head of Arts at Brookes, said: “These young artists should be commended for the ambition and determination required in organising and creating work for an exhibition which will provide them with the valuable experience of exhibiting as professional practicing artists.”

With no set theme, each artist was given complete freedom to express themselves.

This will be the first exhibition curated by the Oxford-based Creative Collective, which aims to promote innovative contemporary art by early-career artists.

Rishi Mullett-Sadones also serves as their director. “The original idea to do this came to me back in March last year, realising there are very few opportunities to exhibit work in a professional environment inside the city unless you are either a professional or postgraduate artist,” he commented.

“Being a photographer myself, I wanted to solve this problem giving likeminded individuals the opportunity to promote their work at an early stage in their careers, while highlighting the fresh innovative talent being produced in Oxfordshire,” he added.

The Jam Factory Restaurant is at 27 Park End Street, Oxford, OX1 1HU. The preview night will be Thursday 4 February 7.30pm to10pm. Entrance is free and open to the public. The exhibition will run until 21 February from 11am to 10pm daily.
