Brookes gains place in University Challenge quarter finals

Brookes students are through to the quarter finals of University Challenge, following a decisive second round win this week against University Of the Arts London.

The team were consistently fast on the buzzer and achieved a score of 320 to University of the Arts' 100. The team was captained by Tony McLarin (History) and other team members were Richard Williams (Architecture), Sarah Johnson, (Mathematical Sciences) and Austin Sherlaw-Johnson, studying for a PhD in Music.

The Brookes team defeated Cardiff University in the first round by 220 to 210 after winning a tie-break starter, ironically about the Oxford literary group the Inklings.

In their first round, University of the Arts London beat Imperial College London, twice former winners of the contest, by 215 to 95.

Dr Ian Bayley, Senior Lecturer in Computing who .formed and coached the team said:

‘It was an amazing result.  Everything seemed to go right for Brookes and it was wonderful to be there in the studio as it happened. I am now looking forward to the next round.'

Brookes will now meet Christ's College, Cambridge in the quarter finals on 27 December.
