Brookes gears up for Cowley Road Carnival
Tuesday, 30 June 2015
Staff and students from Oxford Brookes University are getting set to take part in this year’s Cowley Road Carnival on Sunday (5 July).
Earlier this year, Oxford Brookes was announced as the lead sponsor for the Carnival by Cowley Road Works which coincided with the University’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The theme for this year’s Carnival will be Creating Our Future to reflect Oxford Brookes’ dedication to equipping students, not only for their own future careers, but for their wider contribution to society.
We have planned some extra special activities, games and competitions for families and friends from the local community and I hope everyone will enjoy visiting us in the Brookes Zone.Andrea Siret, Community Relations Manager, Oxford Brookes University
On Sunday, Oxford Brookes will be leading the procession, the traditional beginning of the Carnival. This will involve banners, a parade representing 150 stories marking the University’s anniversary and Brookie - a larger than life mascot created by members of staff, Brookes Union and students.
Andrea Siret, Community Relations Manager at Oxford Brookes said: “Our local community in East Oxford is incredibly important to the University. The carnival is a great opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of this special part of the city and all the great things which happen every day at Oxford Brookes.
“We have planned some extra special activities, games and competitions for families and friends from the local community and I hope everyone will enjoy visiting us in the Brookes Zone.”
Activities taking place in the Brookes Zone will include:
- spin the Wheel of Fortune and win a prize
- discover the Bamboo Bike
- enter our bookworm competition at the Brookes Bus
- make a mortar-board and have your graduation picture taken
- take part in a time-capsule activity
- visit our Victorian Area and discover what Oxford Brookes was like when it first opened as the Oxford School of Art in 1865.
Danielle Battigelli, Executive Director of Cowley Road Works said: “We are delighted that Oxford Brookes decided to celebrate the University’s 150th year at the Cowley Road Carnival.
“The Brookes zone, which is on Manzil Way, is going to be fascinating area for carnival-goers of all ages and the Brookes mascot is a spectacular head at the start of this year’s procession.”
The Carnival starts at 12noon and the procession will set off at 1.30pm from the Plain end of Cowley Road and make its way towards the junction with Magdalen Road. Programmes are already available at some city centre and Cowley Road sites as well as on the day. Carnival-goers are requested to donate a ‘quid for carnival’ to help secure the future of this hugely popular community event and year-long programme of activities.
