Brookes students to inspire future engineers at UTC Swindon

Oxford Brookes Racing team are bringing one of their top racing cars and their passion for engineering to Swindon this Saturday (24 September) for UTC Swindon’s Open Day.
Taking place from 10.00am to 2.00pm, the event is an opportunity for potential students to meet pioneering employers such as BMW and Network Rail.
Oxford Brookes Racing team will be exhibiting one of their race cars, designed, built and raced by students. Visitors to the Open Day will have the opportunity to sit in the car and quiz the team about the engineering behind it.
Gordana Collier, Programme Lead for Postgraduate Engineering and Principal Academic Adviser to the team at Oxford Brookes University said: "Oxford Brookes Racing team are delighted to have another opportunity to visit UTC Swindon and showcase their most successful car ever.
“Our racing team is the only British team ever to win the design competition two years ago at the prestigious world competition at Silverstone. They will be delighted to meet prospective UTC students and infuse their passion for engineering, letting them see what is possible."

The University is a co-sponsor of UTC Swindon, a university technical college which opened in 2014. UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19. The college provides GCSE and A-levels, BTEC qualifications in Engineering and IT are available for young people to study alongside both GCSE's and A-levels.
This summer the college’s first Year 13 students celebrated a 100 per cent rate in all A-Level subjects and in level 3 Engineering 24 per cent of students achieved the equivalent of 3 A*’s with 36 per cent at A* to B.
Principal of UTC Swindon, Angela Barker-Dench said: “We are delighted to have the support of Oxford Brookes and their racing team at our Open Day once more. Their success is a real draw and it will be great for potential students to be able to talk about getting into engineering and where it can take them."
At the Open Day on Saturday potential students will be able to take a guided tour around UTC Swindon’s £10 million state-of-the-art Bristol Street site. On the tour, they’ll see light-filled workshops and classrooms that reflect the workplace, the college’s lecture theatre and a hub area where students can generate ideas, socialise and inspire others.
UTC Swindon will also be accepting applications for the 2016/17 academic year, as well as for both years 10 and 12.
The college will be holding two Open Evenings on Wednesday 19 October 5.30pm-7.30pm and Wednesday 16 November 10.00am-2.00pm, and another Open Day on Saturday 14 January 2017 10.00am – 2.00pm.

Oxford Brookes Racing sits under the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment at the University. The Faculty are undertaking a range of initiatives to attract more female students and staff into traditionally male-dominated subjects such as computing and engineering. This forms part of their ongoing work towards obtaining an Athena SWAN Charter Bronze Award from the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU).
The University has an institutional Bronze Award.
