Discover and explore science with free virtual event
Monday, 25 January 2021
Oxford Brookes University is running its incredibly popular Science Bazaar as a free virtual event on Saturday 13 February from 10.30am to 4pm. The theme for 2021 is ‘Discovery and Exploration’ and the day is packed with exciting activities from racing rocket cars to crocodiles, human health to architecture and nutrition to technology.
Staff and students from the university have created a full programme of live online events and pre-recorded elements giving a flavour of the vast and wide-ranging science research taking place at Oxford Brookes. Although the very popular rocket car race can’t take place in person this year, the organising team has created 1,000 ‘DIY’ kits which are being sent to schools and families so that they can still try their hand at a practical science challenge!
Co-organiser Professor Anna Nekaris said: “All of the Science Bazaar activities are suitable for children over five, so for any parents who are homeschooling at the moment this event could help support what they are doing and inject some fun into science! We have created a day with a huge variety, from learning more about the human body to discovering the mammals of Borneo - there really is something for everyone.”
As part of this year’s event, competitions are running to win Crocodile and Slow Loris adoption packs. And the team is looking for the researchers of the future, asking children and teenagers to come up with their own topics that they would like to investigate - with academic experts from Oxford Brookes judging the entries.
Over 2,000 people came to last year’s event at the university’s campus - with virtual events even easier to attend, this year looks to be even bigger. From 1 February people will be able to access all the pre-recorded content and live activity registration from the Science Bazaar website /science-bazaar/
