Open Lecture at Oxford Brookes University to provide unique insights how creatives can successfully connect.

Maisie Williams, who found global fame with her first acting role as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, will explain how a new social networking app could help others to make their big break.

We are delighted to be welcoming Maisie Williams to the University for what will be a fascinating and engaging discussion. Oxford Brookes is proud to be home to a wide range of courses and academic disciplines which produce graduates and research helping to push forward the creative industries in the UK and overseas.

An Evening with…Maisie Williams will take place at Oxford Brookes’ Headington Campus at 6pm on Thursday 7 February 2019.

The University was chosen as a host for the discussion due to its offer of courses specialising in the creative arts.

Maisie will go into detail about how she broke into the industry, struggles she overcame and how the Daisie app she co-created provides a level playing field for creators by removing the popularity contest and instead putting value on skillset.

The international star will share tips and tricks that she’s learnt along the way, as well as an honest perspective from a 21 year old on the industry as a whole.

Speaking ahead of her talk at Oxford Brookes, Maisie Williams commented: “Our main goal is to have a community of artists who are collaborating with each other, uploading their work, sharing their projects and ultimately help people with their own careers.

She added: “We’re establishing a community that thrives on collaboration, somewhere creative ideas are safe to be explored, developed and understood. For all ages, all regions, all nationalities. Our goal is to fundamentally redesign the way that creatives work together and discover one another.”

Professor Anne-Marie Kilday, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student and Staff Experience, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Maisie Williams to the University for what will be a fascinating and engaging discussion. Oxford Brookes is proud to be home to a wide range of courses and academic disciplines which produce graduates and research helping to push forward the creative industries in the UK and overseas. The opportunity to hear from someone who is using her celebrity to help others to have success is one not to be missed.”

After making her professional acting debut as Arya Stark of Winterfell in the television series Game of Thrones, Maisie’s television work has included a recurring role in Doctor Who as Ashildr and she made her feature film debut in the mystery The Falling (2014).

She launched a new social media app called Daisie in August 2018, aimed at creating a network for creative people, with co-founder Dom Santry with whom she also has founded the film production company Daisy Chain Productions. Daisie is aimed at creative people from the worlds of art, fashion, TV, film, photography, music and literature.

The Maisie Williams talk is now sold out but Open Lectures are available for all to view online via the University’s website.

Other forthcoming events include a lecture from contemporary artists Peter Kennard (3 April 2019) and Chair of UK Sport and University Chancellor Dame Katherine Grainger (24 April 2019). Further information on events at Oxford Brookes is available on the University’s website.
