Dr Julian Bayliss, Conservation Biologist and Brookes PhD alumnus, is currently the subject of a national TV ad by Google, showcasing how he utilised the search engine’s Earth software to help discover a “lost” rainforest.
The Google Stories campaign, which highlights impressive stories from users of their software, shows how Dr Bayliss was able to investigate an area of land in Northern Mozambique around Mount Mabu which hadn’t been documented, and appeared on Google Earth to have all the hallmarks of a rainforest.
Once on the ground in the forest, more than a dozen new plant and animal species were discovered, with Dr Bayliss and Flora and Fauna International now working with the government in Mozambique to create a long term conservation strategy for this previously "hidden" rainforest.
