Graduates reflect on joining Oxford Brookes through Clearing

There are lots of opportunities available through Clearing at Oxford Brookes and there will be particular interest when A-Level results are released on Thursday (15 August 2019).

At a time when many will be making important decisions about their future, we are sharing the experiences of Oxford Brookes graduates who started their academic journey at the University via Clearing.

Christie Roberts
Adult Nursing (2016 - 2019)

Graduate Christie Roberts

“Finding out you’ve not met your offer for another university feels like the end of the world, but Clearing really showed me that one exam that didn’t go my way hadn’t ruled out my chances.

“I was in contact with Oxford Brookes the whole way through, right up until I moved to Oxford to start. Throughout the process Oxford Brookes were really helpful with helping me get DBS and occupational health checks, and in applying for accommodation.

"I’ve made friends for life at Oxford Brookes, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things we’ll end up doing in the future as registered nurses. Your time at university is the biggest adventure of your life. Clearing just gives you another route to start that adventure and I can’t imagine being anywhere else for my degree!”

Laura Haldane
Business Management with International Relations (2015 - 2019)

Graduate Laura Haldane

“On A-Level results day in 2015, I opened up my results to find that I had just fallen short of getting into my insurance choice for university.

“I found that Oxford Brookes did the exact course I wanted to do and offered opportunities to study abroad and gain industry experience, both of which were important to me. Studying at Oxford Brookes was one of the best decisions I’ve made so far in my life. I loved my course and the flexibility of the modules I could focus my studies on.

“A highlight from studying at Oxford Brookes was definitely getting the opportunity to work alongside students from around the world on group work. I found that when working in culturally diverse groups, the quality of work produced increased. Another highlight was the fantastic facilities. The John Henry Brookes Building and the new Clerici building provided plenty of study space and group presentation rooms with all the technology you could need.”

Michael Smith
HND Business and Finance followed by BA (Hons) Business and Retail Management (1992 - 1996)

Graduate Michael Smith

“Oxford just felt right and when I look back on my life now, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Clearing is not scary, it’s not a last resort, it’s a massive opportunity. Grab it, work it and it will be great in the end.

Your time at university is the biggest adventure of your life. Clearing just gives you another route to start that adventure and I can’t imagine being anywhere else for my degree.

Oxford Brookes Graduate Christie Roberts

“The professional in me says that I had a fantastic education. The lecturers, the facilities, the growth and focus were all top notch. I was always, and still am, proud to say that I studied at Oxford Brookes. It’s a fantastic launch pad for your career, whatever it may be.

“The other part of me says that it was the best four years of my life. I learnt so much about life, friendships, relationships, culture and self-growth. I honestly look back on those years as the most fun I have had and the quickest growth I experienced in my entire life.”
