Graduating students present the Fine Art Degree Show 2017
Thursday, 04 May 2017
Graduating students from the Fine Art Degree course at Oxford Brookes University will present Carbon – the Fine Art Degree Show exhibition – in the Glass Tank Gallery and Richard Hamilton Building next week.
The exhibition will begin on Saturday 13 May and features work from 42 students who will complete their studies at the end of this academic year.
The exhibitors all share an experience of developing their practice on a broad based Fine Art programme designed to equip each student with practical, critical, technical and professional skills, whilst placing each individual at the heart of their own study.Dr Clair Chinnery, Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Oxford Brookes University
Carbon features work in a diverse range of media including photography, painting, immersive environments, sculpture, film and performance.
Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Dr Clair Chinnery, said: “A sense of connectedness to the material world sets an appropriate tone for Carbon… The exhibitors all share an experience of developing their practice on a broad based Fine Art programme designed to equip each student with practical, critical, technical and professional skills, whilst placing each individual at the heart of their own study.”
The show features a range of thematic strands, from topical political turmoil both in the Western world and further afield, to ideas which might play on our definitions of the grotesque, the cyborg or materiality.
Carbon explores how people discover, adapt and finally accept processes which are outside of their control, and will encourage visitors to contemplate how life is born of, and indeed returns to, carbon.
Throughout the exhibition, the artists will operate a programme of workshops, tours, family events, artist talks and more, giving visitors the opportunity to engage with the exhibition and with the arts at Oxford Brookes University.
In April, Oxford Brookes University launched its first Student Art Collection which includes outstanding pieces of art created by students for the Fine Art Degree and Architecture End of Year Shows. The pieces of work are permanently on show across campus and will be added to over time.
Carbon will be in the Glass Tank Gallery and Richard Hamilton Building on the University’s Headington Campus until Thursday 18 May 2017.
