Green Flag 2014

Oxford Brookes’ three city campuses have again received a Green Flag Award in recognition of the high quality of their green spaces.

Harcourt Hill, Headington and Wheatley Campuses have all been given the accolade, the third year in a row when all three Oxford sites have been recognised.

The awards, announced today, Monday 28 July, are given annually to green spaces throughout the UK and are judged by a group of local volunteer experts against a strict set of criteria, which look at horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and level of community involvement.

Oxford Brookes is dedicated to ensuring that its green spaces help to make the University a better place to study, work and visit, and this latest award acknowledges our efforts to continue to achieve that vision.

The three sites were judged to be welcoming, safe and sustainably managed, with a commitment to conservation and heritage and engagement with the community also being recognised.

Brookes is one of only 11 UK universities to receive a Green Flag and is the only one to have been awarded three.

Tom Williams, Grounds Manager at Oxford Brookes, said: “I am delighted that Oxford Brookes’ three city campuses have once again been presented with Green Flag Awards. I would like to thank every member of the team who has helped to maintain our beautiful outdoor spaces and whose hard work has led to this recognition.

The three flags will fly from flagpoles at each of the sites, and are among eight such awards across Oxford, with five of the City Council’s parks also being recognised.

The awards are run in conjunction with the Department for Communities and Local Government and Keep Britain Tidy, a campaign group which works to reduce litter and encourage pride in the country.
