Oxford Brookes Racing finished as the best UK team in this year’s Formula Student competition held at Silverstone between Wednesday 11 July and Sunday 15 July.

Formula Student is the world’s largest student motorsport competition and challenges university motorsport engineering teams from across the globe to design, build and race a single-seat racing car in one year. The cars are then judged on their speed, acceleration and endurance, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills.

Oxford Brookes Racing finished in second place in the Engineering Design category and the Skid-Pad Challenge, and third place in the Endurance Challenge. The results meant the team placed second out of 81 teams in the world for the overall competition behind Monash University in Australia.

This success demonstrates the high-standard of our students and the capabilities, innovation and engineering knowledge they have gained at Oxford Brookes. The team have been able to deliver a complex product in a demanding and competitive environment and they are excellent ambassadors for both the University and British engineering.

Oxford Brookes Racing team member Meghann Whattam who has just finished her second year studying Motorsport Engineering said: “Formula Student UK 2018 was the best competition I have experienced in my three years on the team.

Formula-Student-Silverstone-2018-800x450“We had a great time watching our car compete in all of the events, and a great statics run too. We were also able to cheer on our friend Maria Rubia when she won the Craig Dawson Most Valuable Team Member Award and for most team members, we experienced being on stage for the first time collecting awards.

“We are all really excited to depart for Europe next week, to go and show off our car’s capabilities overseas. We’d like to thank everyone who helped us; faculty advisors, sponsors and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers for allowing us to compete in such a fantastic competition."

Last month, the team unveiled their 2018 Formula Student car, Frankie, after designing and building the car alongside their studies throughout the year. Watch Oxford Brookes Racing’s official promotional video for Frankie below.
