Oxford Brookes Racing unveils the 2019 Formula Student car enhanced with Virtual Reality
Wednesday, 05 June 2019
Oxford Brookes Racing (OBR) unveiled the new 2019 Formula Student car Lily on Friday 7 June in the JHB Forum on Headington Campus. Invited guests, sponsors and alumni attended the event, which featured a Virtual Reality (VR) version of the single-seat race car.
VR was an added dimension which allowed for a 3D immersive experience to explore the car in detail with the use of headsets. The new car was the culmination of a year of detailed planning, designing and building by students, alongside their studies. After a successful 20 year history with combustion engines in the Formula Student competition, OBR is making the shift to electric for the 2020 season. With a new team structure and additional class 2 project to serve as a Research & Development platform, OBR is poised to not only take on the top Formula Student teams in the world, but to also serve as a test bed of innovation for electric vehicles and controls software.
The event was covered on OBR social media channels: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Also on the team’s YouTube channel.
OBR is distinctly international - the team of students who built the car come from a range of countries including the USA, Mexico, Colombia, South Africa and more.
The aim of the project is to inspire students to develop their professional, managerial and entrepreneurial skills. One example is their use of 3D printing in the design of the car. Marketing Manager, Maria Fatialofa of RPS which is sponsoring the team said:
“RPS is proud to be the official 3D printing sponsor for OBR 2019. At RPS we believe it is important to support and mentor the future graduates of STEM education and we are very pleased to be working with the students at Oxford Brookes Racing. Well done to OBR for all their hard work and we wish them the best of luck for Formula Student 2019.”
Oxford Brookes Racing is the most successful UK team in the winners circle of the Formula Student competition held at Silverstone. Formula Student is the world’s largest student motorsport competition and challenges university motorsport engineering teams from across the globe to design, build and race a single-seat race car in one year. The cars are judged on their speed, acceleration and endurance, while the teams are put through their paces in terms of design, costing and business presentation skills.
Oxford Brookes is uniquely positioned in the heart of Motorsport Valley - the nexus for clean automotive and related industries. With excellent industry links and placement opportunities, the University prepares students for their future careers in motorsport engineering. Oxford Brookes has graduates in every Formula One team.
Oxford Brookes Racing is led by Engineering students, supported by the staff in the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics and it is open to any Brookes students who wish to get involved in motor racing, no matter which subject they are studying.
