Professor from University of Pennsylvania to give nursing talk in Swindon

A professor specialising in the study of experiences of ageing and care for older people will be visiting Oxford Brookes’ campus in Swindon next Tuesday (7 May) to give an afternoon lecture on nursing education and practice.

Guest speaker, Sarah H. Kagan PhD, RN is the Lucy Walker Honorary Term Professor of Gerontological Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania.

The lecture is one of a series of lectures Oxford Brookes is hosting this year in Swindon and Oxford, as it celebrates 125 years of nursing education. The celebrations launched in January and include further lectures, events, exhibitions and fundraising activities.

Nursing care is essential to the health and wellbeing of any population around the world. Yet questions of how to educate nurses and to what standard create controversy and discord in the discipline and increasingly in public spheres.

Speaking about her lecture Sarah H. Kagan said: “Nursing care is essential to the health and wellbeing of any population around the world. Yet questions of how to educate nurses and to what standard create controversy and discord in the discipline and increasingly in public spheres.
“In my lecture I will explore the dimensions of intelligence, knowledge and conduct for nurses, upon whom we rely for essential care often at the most vulnerable times of our lives.”

The lecture, titled Book smarts, street smarts, nurse smarts, is open to all and will take place on Tuesday 7 June from 2.00pm to 3.00pm at Oxford Brookes’ Ferndale Campus in Swindon.

Sarah practices as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Living Well Geriatric Oncology Programme at Pennsylvania Hospital. She was made an Honorary Doctor of Science by Oxford Brookes in 2013.

Oxford Brookes has been teaching adult nursing degree and diploma courses at the Ferndale Campus in Swindon since 1999; together with an Operating Department Practice diploma course and a range of continuing professional development (CPD) courses.

If you are interested in studying any of these courses, there will be an Adult Nursing and Operating Department Practice Open Day at the Ferndale Campus in Swindon on Saturday 11 June 9.30am to 12.30pm. Visitors will receive an introductory presentation and have the opportunity to talk individually to current students and members of staff.

In September 2016 the University will be moving its Swindon Campus to a larger, improved site at the Delta Business Park in West Swindon, significantly enhancing teaching, learning and research. The new building which will have a new library and social learning spaces, high quality teaching spaces, clinical skills labs and catering facilities.
