Scholarship ceremony for international students
Friday, 21 October 2016
Students from across the world were recently awarded scholarships at a ceremony recognising their success and vital contribution to Oxford Brookes University.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Paul Inman (International Recruitment) hosted the event at the University on Friday 14 October.
Students received one of three awards: the Santander China Postgraduate Taught Scholarship, the Richard Haill International Scholarship for foundation students and the Pre-master’s Academic Excellence Scholarship.
All recipients were selected by judging panels who were asked to consider each applicant’s prior academic performance.

Richard Side, Director of Oxford Brookes International, reminded everyone of the University’s continued international outlook:
“It is always a pleasure to honour exceptional students, and this event is also a reminder of what talent and achievement there is among our international students and what they can bring to the University. At a time when some are advocating an approach that seems increasingly insular, it is important to recognise that Oxford Brookes remains internationally committed, and having a diverse international student population is a necessary and beneficial part of that.”
Richard Haill, a former lecturer, attended the event to present certificates for the scholarship bearing his name. He founded Oxford Polytechnic’s English Language Unit in 1988 which evolved in to what is now Oxford Brookes International.
Denisse Ortiz from Ecuador who received this scholarship said: “Being awarded with this scholarship is a huge honour and I am proud to have received this recognition and be a part of Oxford Brookes University. This scholarship has encouraged me to push on with my studies and never give up.”
Simon Poulter, Santander’s University Relationship Branch Manager, commented on Oxford Brookes’ almost ten year relationship with the bank’s higher education division: “The creation of the Santander China Postgraduate Taught Scholarships stands in testament to the solid partnership between Santander Universities and Oxford Brookes University.
“Our commitment to higher education is unwavering and we are proud to be able to help a new generation of Brookes students to achieve their academic and professional aspirations.”
All three scholarships awarded at this event will be available to students starting in September 2017.
