The Oxford Academy has had a record year for students from its sixth form progressing to university.
Oxford Brookes University is a sponsor of The Oxford Academy and has worked closely with the school over a number of years to support pupil progression to university.
This year, 42% of Year 13 students at the Academy have secured a place to study at university, up from 31% last year. Six students have secured a place at Oxford Brookes.
I’m really looking forward to starting at Brookes in September! I wouldn’t be going there without the help of the Brookes Engage course and the support from my careers advisor...Sofia Lambe, Year 13 student at The Oxford Academy
Kathy Wittet, Head of Careers at The Oxford Academy said: “We’re delighted that so many of our Year 13 students are progressing to university this year. Many congratulations to the students and staff for their hard work and dedication.
“Thank you also to the Oxford Brookes widening participation team for all you have done to support our students through the UCAS application process and beyond. We look forward to working in partnership with you again next year.”
In total, 19 students from The Oxford Academy applied for university and 18 of these will be going, with one deferring for a year.
As well as receiving in-school support, students from the Academy have taken part in Brookes Engage, a programme designed to support pupils from across Oxfordshire to make a successful transition into university or further education.
Sofia Lambe, who took part in the Brookes Engage programme this year, will be coming to Oxford Brookes in September to study Education Studies. She said: “I’m really looking forward to starting at Brookes in September! I wouldn’t be going there without the help of the Brookes Engage course and the support from my careers advisor, here’s to an exciting and challenging next three years!”
Alice Wilby, Director UK Recruitment and Partnerships at Oxford Brookes University, said: “We’re proud to support The Oxford Academy and it’s great to hear that so many pupils will be going to university this year. We look forward to continuing our work with the school next year.”
