UTC Swindon student secures dream apprenticeship with Mercedes
Tuesday, 23 August 2016
A student at UTC Swindon has secured a prestigious apprenticeship with Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.
Ed Gamble, a Year 13 student who is studying a level 3 extended diploma (equivalent of three A levels) and A level maths, will be based at the purpose-built Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre in Brixworth, Northamptonshire when the apprenticeship starts. There, a team of over 500 people are responsible for the design, manufacture and testing of Formula 1 power units for Mercedes AMG Petronas, Sahara Force India, Williams Martini Racing and Manor Racing.
For Ed the apprenticeship is a dream come true. He said: “It’s my ambition to build a career in motor racing, so this was an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down. It proves that making the decision to study at UTC Swindon was the right one as openings like this don’t arise at many schools or colleges.”

Principal at UTC Swindon Angela Barker-Dench said: “Of course, we’re really proud to see one of our students secure an apprenticeship with such a high profile organisation in such an exciting sport.
“Even more importantly, we’re delighted to be helping young people like Ed achieve their life goals and get their careers off to the best possible start.”
Working with its sponsors, Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University, UTC Swindon addresses the divide between education and industry, giving students a competitive edge to securing first-class careers.
Last week, UTC Swindon celebrated A level success when their first Year 13 students received a 100 per cent pass rate.
UTC Swindon is open this month for visits and there is still time to enrol for September 2016. More information can be found at www.utcswindon.co.uk.
