Vince Cable in visit to Oxford Brookes
Thursday, 14 February 2013
Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, has visited Oxford Brookes.
He saw how the University’s Department for Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences works closely with local automotive and motorsport firms both by supplying the workforce of the future and through research into new, often low carbon technologies. He was particularly interested in exploring what can be done to encourage more young people to study engineering at a higher level.
Commenting on this Vince Cable said: "Maintaining a good supply of engineers is vital to our economy. We start from a serious shortfall. Today at Oxford Brookes University I've seen how the institution is training students to an excellent standard and linking up with business to ensure they have the right skills and expertise. This will help meet the deficit in engineers, making the UK better able to compete in manufacturing, especially."
He met students from Oxford Brookes Racing at the Wheatley Campus and learned about last year’s Formula Student competition at Silverstone, where they were the top UK team, beating 50 other domestic teams, and came seventh overall in the European standings.
He also met Professor Phil Torr, who leads the Computer Vision group, and learned about the technological wizardry behind the Sony Wonderbook which brings ‘spells’ from Harry Potter to life. The project is the result of a successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the London studio of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and the Computer Vision Group.
