Westminster Sports Centre gym has re-opened following a £38,000 revamp.

The fitness suite at the Harcourt Hill site was opened by Great Britain and Oxford City Athletic Club runner Hannah England (pictured). Hannah is a London 2012 Olympic hopeful mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes.

Staff, students and members of the public were invited to the opening which involved a free barbeque and free use of the all facilities.

The new 55-station fitness suite contains a wider range of equipment than before and allows users to complete a full body workout. Cardio and free weights sections have also been added. In addition, televisions and music systems are now available.

Specialist ‘wheelchair-friendly’ equipment has also been purchased. Stuart McCarroll, Westminster Sports Centre Manager said: “We are aiming to improve this area of the sports centre and this new equipment will make the centre more accessible for the disabled. The whole sports centre is based on a single level and designed for wheelchair use.”

Other facilities include two newly refurbished squash courts, synthetic and tarmac tennis courts, six full-sized grass football and rugby pitches, a sports hall for volleyball and badminton, a 25-metre indoor heated swimming pool and a nine hole golf course. Some of the fitness classes on offer include circuit training, pilates and aquafit.

Hannah England competed at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi earlier this year and also at the European Championships in Barcelona. The Sports Centre is also used by Hannah Green, another Oxford local and London 2012 Olympic hopeful in synchronised swimming.
