A student from Oxford Brookes is hoping to be part of the youngest two-man team to successfully row the Atlantic Ocean.

Tom Heal, a 2nd year Business and Management student at Oxford Brookes, is hoping to be part of the youngest-ever crew to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

His story has been picked up by The Daily Telegraph

Tom, from Petersfield in Sussex and his friend Will Smith, who lives in Badminton near Bristol, and who are both 21, are setting off from the Canary Islands as part of the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race.

If all goes to plan, they'll reach Antigua in the West Indies around the end of February in their boat Heritage Explorer.

"If we do manage to make it we'll be the youngest team ever by about three months," explained Tom.

"The average age of all the other competitors will be quite a lot older than us. They will be 30-plus."

He added: "Although it's the safest and calmest time of year to do that route it is definitely possible we will be in 30ft to 40ft swells. We'll definitely face some pretty hairy days."
