• Benefits measures

    The Benefits Review consists of four documents (including this page) that together give the full picture of the PUTS Benefits.  

    The four PUTS Benefit Review documents are:

    Interpreting the Diagram

    On the diagram, the final end point is at the right hand side of the page. This is where the 5 main benefits of the project are listed in green. The Benefits Review - Benefits Measurement document suggests ways of knowing how much we have achieved these benefits.

    The colours are for ease of identifying an item as either a benefit, enabler, output, outcome (secondary benefit) as listed in the key on the diagram.

    Benefits review diagrams are used to show what is needed to produce the final end benefits so the outcomes (in deep pink) are needed to help create the benefits.  Without the outcomes the benefits will not be realised. To the left of the outcomes are outputs and enablers (blue and orange). These are needed to produce the outcomes.

    For example, once we have achieved the output “Removal / change of slotting of modules” we will be able to have “more efficient, accurate scheduling” which in turn will enable us to create the benefit of “agile scheduling”.  Or if we have not produced the “Removal / change of slotting of modules” we will not be able to fully “implement the Timetabling Policy” which in turn will limit our ability to create the benefit of “agile scheduling”.

    Since this is a large and complex project the benefits review diagram just shows the high level benefits and outcomes (secondary benefits) in detail.  Most benefits review diagrams show a number of levels of item flowing into the final benefits. Attempting this with this project produced an extremely complex diagram.

    The enablers have therefore been shown (in orange) feeding generally into all of the outcomes (pink) to limit the complexity of the diagram.  It is still possible to read from left to right starting with the enablers. 

    For example, if we have “staff cooperation” we will be able to fully “implement the Timetabling Policy” which in turn will enable us to create the benefit of “agile scheduling”, one of our final benefits.

    The benefits review highlights, amongst other things, the interwoven nature of this project.

    The outcomes are numbered and more detailed information about what is needed to generate each outcome is listed in the Benefits Review - Notes document.  In a more simple project the items in the Notes document would appear on the far left of the diagram with arrows indicating their feed into the outcomes and also the enablers.
