Within the School, the Impact Assessment Unit (IAU) is a well-established centre for research and training in environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA). It has an international profile in leading edge studies of EIA/SEA and their application, such as recent work on climate change and resilience. UK research assessment exercises have highlighted the IAU’s work as being of ‘international standing’. Our clients, funders and partners have included the EU, national governments and agencies, local government and the commercial sector. Our expertise includes: strategic assessment and sustainability appraisal; socio-economic impacts; climate change mitigation and adaptation; screening, scoping and monitoring, and techniques such as expert systems. We work across a range of sectors such as renewable and non-renewable energy and urban development. Current projects include carbon accounting and EIA, and on-going energy infrastructure studies. In addition to our array of popular short courses and CPD, the IAU is a major centre for post- graduate study, at doctoral and masters level, including the MSc/ PgDip in Environmental Assessment and Management.
