Wednesday the 5th of June saw a mixture of alumni, past staff, current staff and students mingling together to celebrate the contribution of a number of staff in the department of Biological and Medical Sciences. The event was a success, with over
70 guests attending to reminisce about their time at Brookes.
Three particularly special alumni were present from the 1973 cohort -
taking us right back to the first days of modular degrees and the Polytechnic.
After tea and cake (in the old SU bar no less!) and some presentations on what the department is getting up to now,
three former Deans of Faculty (Dick Yorke, David Beadle and Linda King)
joined in the celebration together with many old friends. Our alumni and past staff gathered in the Galaxy Lounge to raise a glass to the success of six particular staff members Alwyn Griffiths, Peter Grebenik, Dick Craven, David Fell, Sue Robbins
and Tony Bradshaw.
The evening also gave an opportunity to share in the departments recent successes too. Sue's election as Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy was a brilliant recognition of her excellent work supporting students over the last 24 years,
this was a particularly fitting event to do so, with
two members of the very first 'Foundation Science' course present. David's recent success in winning Research Council funding for a partnership with Delhi highlights the international reach of his work and of the Department today.
Many toasts were made to the staff members, and a few amusing anecdotes told. Alongside the celebrations the evening was full of old friends catching up, as many people just wanted to talk to staff they remembered fondly, or exchange stories of their
times since University.
Finally, the six staff members agreed that they would like to see student prizes made available, to reward commitment and progress in years one and two, to encourage students to make the most of their time in BMS. This fits very well
with Sue Robbins work in student support and would be a lasting recognition of this very valuable area. If you think you would be interested in supporting our students in this way, please don't hesitate to get in contact with David Evans at

and select 'area of greatest need' in the drop down.
Many photos of the event were taken, including some of the past staff and a cohort from '78. A slideshow of photos can be seen below, or you can visit the
alumni facebook page here
