I received a candidata magisterii (BSc) in biology with a specialisation in physiology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU, Trondheim) in 2003. Following this, I studied for a D.Phil. degree in physiology at the University of Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics under the supervision of Professor Peter Robbins. My research was on cardiorespiratory control following baroreflex modulation and hypoxic exposures in humans. I received my D.Phil. in 2008.
In 2009, I started a postdoctoral research post at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience, University of Oxford. Here, I investigated brain mechanisms associated with respiratory challenges. The main focus of this research was the processing of dyspnoea in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. I joined Oxford Brookes University as an Early Career Research Fellow in April 2014 and have since been working on brain mechanisms and plasticity associated with cardiorespiratory control in humans. My research is supported by Oxford Brookes Central Research Fund (CRF).
