    Swim school classes for children

Brookes Sport Swim School provides high quality swim tuition for babies, pre-schoolers and children aged 4 years and over.

Up to the age of 4, children can join the Aqua Tots programme. This includes lessons for babies, tots, and pre-schoolers, and runs on Monday afternoons, and Thursday and Saturday mornings. We are delighted to be recommended by Baby College Oxford  for our work with this age group.

From 4 years and up, children are able to join our core Swim School (Stages 1-7). This takes place on weekday afternoons, and on a Saturday morning. After completing Stage 7, swimmers then have the opportunity to choose between an Introduction to Competitive Swimming/Fitness Class or join our Rookie Lifeguard programme.

The Swim School also offers a 1-2-1 programme of swimming lessons for children of all ages.

    Swim school classes for adults

Brookes Sport Swim School provides high quality tuition for all adult abilities. Our half hour lessons take place on Tuesdays at 6.00pm

1-2-1 adult lessons are also available for those that would prefer a private session.

    Swim School FAQ

  • To support your child’s swimming journey, Brookes Sport Swim School uses an adapted version of the ASA Learn to Swim Pathway. This is a multi-skill, multi-aquatic and all-inclusive framework, which develops FUNdamental movement skills and basic movement literacy in water.
An ASA badge and certificate is issued free of charge when pupils complete each Stage of the Learn to Swim Pathway.
Wherever possible, we try to keep to our preferred ratio of 6 pupils to 1 teacher. The majority of Stage 1 and 2 classes also have additional water helpers.
On occasions when a child is expected to move out of a full class imminently, we may move another child in to prevent bottlenecking and long waiting times.

We can only run a maximum of 4 classes at any one time. With 10 Stages in the programme, it is therefore not possible to run all Stages simultaneously.

Although we endeavour to place siblings either in the same time slot or consecutive time slots, we cannot guarantee that this will always be possible.

Yes, but by running single stages, children will always be in classes with pupils of similar ability, and are likely to progress more swiftly through the programme.
Assessment is continuous throughout the swim year.
Although our teachers conduct assessments regularly on-poolside, this is certainly not possible every week. Our emphasis is on the concrete teaching needed for pupils to progress, and we do not want our teachers to spend too much time looking at their iPods!
Your child will receive a completion slip when they are ready to move to the next stage, and you will be able to choose any available time during the week.

Upon enrolling your child in the Swim School, you are able to register to use our 'Home Portal'. Home Portal enables you to monitor your child’s progress against our set competencies for each Stage.
Each competency is graded from ‘Not assessed’ to ‘Pass’. Once all criteria are passed, your child is eligible to move up to the next stage.
Instructions to register and sign in to Home Portal are provided on our noticeboard opposite the pool. You will need your child’s membership card prior to starting the registration process.
