Announcing the nominees for the #TEAMBrookes Fresher of the Year
The Fresher of the Year award is handed to the first year student that has made the biggest impact within #TEAMBrookes over the last year and contributed to the performance and success of their club at Oxford Brookes.
Keep an eye out for the winner to be announced across our Instagram and Twitter channels on Friday.
This year’s nominees for Fresher of the Year are...
Izzy Zealley, Lacrosse
Izzy made a lot of important saves during her first year as goalie on the Lacrosse women’s 1st team. After winning their league in the previous year the team competed at Tier 1 level in the Midlands Conference and capped a successful season by finishing third and making it to the quarter-finals of the Trophy.
On top of her commitment to the Oxford Brookes team she was also selected for the senior Wales A Lacrosse team. Izzy will be a valuable player moving forward as the team aims to finish higher up the league table next year.
Tye Rath, Squash
Tye instantly clicked with the Squash Club due to his consistent positive attitude and strong leadership skills. He very quickly affirmed himself as a competitive member of the Men’s 1st team by always putting 100% into training and being on top of matches and league points.
The Men’s 1st team had a strong season finishing 2nd in Tier 2 of the Midlands Conference and making it through to the Semi-Finals of the Conference Cup. His ability to keep calm and supportive in high-pressure situations and hard work mentality meant he was an obvious choice for the new President of the Squash Club next year.
Margarita Dzhambazka, Fencing
Margarita proved herself to be an invaluable asset to the Women's Fencing Team - acting as anchors for both the foil and sabre disciplines. Her dedication to the BUCS competitive circuit was reflected in the success the women had during their unbeaten season in the league and the cup.
Not only has she been crucial for competitive success, but she also showed interest in the running of the club and successfully ran for club’s treasurer for the next academic year.
Maxwell Mauchline, Basketball
Max has been an active member of the Basketball Club both on and off the court. He was a key player for both the BUCS and National League teams, where many times he was the leading scorer. The Men’s team had a successful season finishing runners up in Tier 2 of the Midlands conference.
Off the court, Maxwell was involved with making decisions and providing new ideas to resolve problems that the committee faced.
