Welcome to Brookes Sport's celebration of Disability History Month 2020

Disability History Month

We are proud to announce that over the next month, Brookes Sport is joining the wider Oxford Brookes community in celebrating UK Disability History Month. From the 18th November to the 18th December, Brookes Sport is celebrating everything about disability sport, to raise awareness and promote the successes of our disabled users, athletes, students and local community projects. On the 3rd December, to honour International Day for People with Disabilities, the Oxford Brookes University Centre for Sport will also join the Headington Campus in celebrating the global #PurpleLightUp movement, through lighting up the centre with purple light.

Brookes Sport has a proud history of being inclusive and providing facilities that allow people, from all walks of life, to get involved and get active. We want everyone to know and understand that we are here to support them on their journey, regardless of their ability. We understand that we can always do more so we are committed to exploring where we currently are to establish how far we still have to go.

The ongoing pandemic is disproportionately impacting the lives of disabled people. We at Brookes Sport are strong believers in physical activity positively impacting all aspects of our lives, with both physical and mental benefits, so ensuring access and inclusivity to opportunities is our top priority.

Over the next 4 and a half weeks we will be sharing all kinds of exciting content, from interviews with Rosie Clear, who recently completed the Rickshaw Challenge as part of this year’s Children in Need, to talking about how Brookes Climb and the Brookes Swim School support opportunities for disabled individuals. Some of our community members, students and academic staff have also taken the time to tell their stories, which we are excited to share and hope will be both inspirational and educational.
