Nisa Akkok selected for stage 2 of taekwondo “fighting chance” programme

Finally a positive sporting achievement for #TEAMBroookes sport, during this period of virtual sessions and social distancing!
Every four years, GB Taekwondo, in partnership with the English Institute of Sport and UK Sport, run their “Fighting Chance” programme which is a talent ID pathway to recruit talented athletes to become teammates with and train for a year with British Taekwondo Olympic and World Champions.
To enter the Senior Fighting Chance programme, athletes must be over 16, be a British Citizen and be able to commit to the full-time professional, year-long training schedule which is based in Manchester.
Six #TEAMBrookes athletes were successful in their application and invited to the phase one assessment (Azra Akkok, Fraser Salisbury, Chris Lam, Nisa Akkok, Georgia Dorrell and Thomas Stuart). From these six Brookes students, Nisa Akkok was selected for stage 2 of the programme which is taking place at the beginning of January.

#TEAMBrookes Taekwondo Coach, Phil Robinson, described this achievement as, “...huge news for a performance-orientated club, let alone a university club where we are a bit broader in our approach.”
He is also very proud of all of the #TEAMBrookes athletes, “...as you can imagine I’m super proud of these guys who have put in so much effort over the last two and a half years. I’m really glad they have been able to flourish at Brookes.”
In a year of uncertainty and limited sport, we are very excited to continue to support Nisa throughout this journey.
The Oxford Brookes Taekwondo Club is one of our few clubs that is open to both Oxford Brookes students and non-students who are over 18 and they welcome all levels of ability. More information about the club can be found here and on their Instagram.
