Covid reopen

Brookes Sport is set to welcome visitors back from Monday 17 August

[Updated: 30.10.20]

At Brookes Sport we are working back to full operation and were pleased to be able to welcome visitors back into our facilities on Monday 17th August.

That said, we understand that things won’t be quite the same for a while, and as such we have put into place measures to ensure that our facilities are safe to use for all of our customers and staff, and we’ve provided further details below.

Memberships Payments

Direct Debit membership payments will not restarted on Tuesday 1 September.

Please note that until swimming lessons are able to resume, those with Swim School Direct Debits will not have any payments taken without prior communication.

We are aware that whilst we froze all membership payments in March, some customers may have already cancelled their memberships – for those customers who would like to return, we request that you sign up for a new membership via our Join at Home system online, or contact sportsmembership@brookes.ac.uk for more information.

For those joining with new memberships, or those who cancelled their memberships at the start of the lockdown, there will be no joining fees in place.

If you would like to cancel your Brookes Sport Membership, please cancel your Direct Debit instruction by contacting your bank directly by telephone or banking app. Your bank will notify our membership team.

If you wish to extend your freeze, please email sportsmembership@brookes.ac.uk by 12 noon on Friday 21 August with the date you wish to freeze up to.

Please note. We are accepting freeze requests up to Saturday 2 January 2021. If you wish to freeze for longer than this period, please contact your bank to cancel your Direct Debit instruction.

If you are still experiencing problems with booking, please email sportsmembership@brookes.ac.uk

Visiting our centres

Both Brookes Sport Harcourt Hill, and Brookes Sport Headington are open. You can find our centre opening times here

The first changes you might notice will happen before you arrive. In order for us to adequately maintain social distancing requirements and allow for safe use of our facilities, all activities will need to be booked, and where necessary, paid in advance. This can be done via our online booking system, or via the BrookesSport app.

Once at the Sports Centre, we encourage all visitors with the NHS Covid-19 contact tracing app to scan the QR code located at the entrance to our buildings. You will also see signs directing traffic around the building with new routes to enter and exit our facilities. The team at Brookes Sport will be on hand to help direct you and answer any questions, and there will be additional hand sanitiser stations throughout the facilities. Social distancing will also play a large part in our return to operation, with fitness equipment separated, and studio flooring taped to ensure safe space for those working out.

Our reception areas have screens separating our returning customers from our reception staff, and all payments will be cashless. If you need to make any payments, please do not bring cash or cheque as we will not be able to accept these methods of payment. Please follow all instructions from staff and notices around the facilities.

Hire equipment will not be available, so please bring whatever equipment is required for your activity or sport. The exception to this is climbing shoes, which we are now able to hire again.

In addition to the above, our operations team will have an enhanced cleaning regime in place.

You must not organise to meet at the sports facilities with anyone outside of your household or support bubbles and must maintain social distancing at all times.

Use of Face Coverings

Whilst official government advice is for those taking part in sport or exercise to not wear a face covering, the use of face coverings at Brookes Sport when not taking part in physical activity is mandatory.

Within the climbing facilities, face coverings must be worn at all times whilst not on the wall - exceptions apply where users are medically exempt or are aged 11 years or younger.

Students and staff of Oxford Brookes University who are exempt from wearing face coverings under government guidelines will be able to collect a sunflower lanyard without the need to provide the university with any personal information.

Gyms and Fitness Classes

For detailed information on how we are making our gyms Covid-secure, please visit the webpage for our gyms.

To maintain social distancing, access to the gyms will require pre-booking via our online system or our app, and capacities for each area will be limited. Bookable sessions will last 60 minutes, and we will have a 15 minute changeover and cleaning schedule between each slot. Further details of our bookable slot can be found at the above link

At Headington we will be asking our gym users to either book a space in our Free Weights Gym area OR the Cardio Gym, and to not move between both areas in the same visit. New ventilation and air cleaning equipment has been installed in the free weights gym at Headington and the gym at Harcourt Hill to help improve the air quality.

Monday 17 August saw the start of our new fitness timetable which you can find here. All classes must be pre-booked, and we ask that visitors arrive no more than 5-10 minutes ahead of their booked session with appropriate clothing. We also ask that visitors bring their own water, as water fountains around the facilities will be out of use.

Our unsupervised gym at Wheatley, as well as our steam rooms and saunas at both Harcourt Hill and Headington will remain closed.

Climbing

As with our other facilities, a climbing visit will be a pre-bookable activity with bookings separated by area. You can book a climbing slot online, or via our BrookesSport app.

Within our climbing wall you will also notice a few differences. There will be floor markings to “zone” areas of the bouldering rooms, and there will be signs informing our climbers of our practices. We will also have hand sanitiser positioned around the facility as well as complimentary liquid chalk – as powder and solid chalk will not be allowed within the wall to minimise dust levels.

We have also put into place additional ventilation equipment in order to improve the clean air flow around the facility and we will have additional cleaning practices in place.

Climbing shoes will be available to hire for those who require a pair.

For more detailed information on climbing, please visit our climbing webpage.

Swimming Pool and Lessons

The swimming pool at Harcourt Hill will remain closed - this is while we installation works for a new air handling system continue so that we can ensure the safest possible environment for our staff and customers. Once we have a date for completion we will communicate this with our members.

With the pool remaining closed, Swim School customers will not be asked to restart their payments.

Headington Sports Bar

Our sports bar currently remains closed - we will share further details of our reopening plans once these are available.

Changing Rooms and Showers

Changing rooms will remain closed for the time being, although will be available for those customers with disabilities or special needs. Please speak to a member of staff on duty for further information.

Lockers will also be unavailable, and we ask customers to either leave valuables at home, or keep them on their person whilst visiting our facilities, and to arrive in suitable clothing to take part in exercise.

Unsubscribing from emails, and NHS Test & Trace

If you are no longer a member of Brookes Sport, please click here to request your details be removed from our database.

Brookes Sport are following the government’s advice on Test & Trace and as such will be encouraging all of our visitors to make sure the contact details we hold are up to date and correct. For more information on Test & Trace, please visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/maintaining-records-of-staff-customers-and-visitors-to-support-nhs-test-and-trace#information-to-collect

Submitting your details for use by NHS Test & Trace is voluntary and you will have the opportunity to opt-out of having your personal information used in this way. If you do not wish for your details to be made available for Test & Trace purposes, please email sportsmembership@brookes.ac.uk with Test & Trace in the subject heading.

For those with the NHS Covid-19 contact tracing app, we have installed QR codes at the entrances to our facilities that can be scanned through the app.

BrookesSport App

You can download our Brookes Sport App to make booking gym, climbing or classes easier. Available on Android and IOS.
